A blog for my stay in West Africa working with Journalists For Human Rights in Takoradi, Ghana at SKYY Radio & Television News and in Freetown, Sierra Leone at the Concord Times newspaper.
Sara Minogue describes her negative experience working with JHR in this 'tell-all' article. To train or be trained, that is the question - but when everybody's learning, does it really matter?
While in Ghana I will be working with Journalists for Human Rights, a Canadian NGO that focuses on harnessing the power of the media to combat human rights abuses. Through building the capacity of the media to report effectively on human rights issues, JHR works to pressure abusers to stop and empower victims to fight back. Check out the website at www.jhr.ca.
Simon Oczkowski, a 2nd year medical student and class mate of my girlfriend, shares a fantastic tale of his experience in Kampala, Uganda working in a local hospital. Wonderfully written, Simon's article deftly describes the inherent inequities experienced with a potential rabies exposure in a developing nation. http://www.openmedicine.ca/article/view/150/91
